Meals on Wheels is a program that delivers meals to individuals at home who are unable to purchase or prepare their own meals. In Fresno County, Meals on Wheels is called the Home Delivered Meals Program.
Home-delivered meals will help home bound older adults improve their diet, improve their nutrition, reduce food insecurity, and improve quality-of-life.
The first Meals on Wheels program began in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in January 1954. At the request of the Philadelphia Health and Welfare Council and funded by a grant from the Henrietta Tower Wurtz Foundation.
As is the case today, many participants were people who did not require hospitalization, but who simply needed a helping hand in order to maintain their independence.
